Alex Wilkins emerged as one of the best freshman guards in the country
Wilkins started all 35 games and averaged 17.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 29.9 minutes per game while shooting 46.0% from the field, 32.8% from 3-point range and 82.4% at the foul line. Furman went 22-13 and won the Southern Conference tournament.
He earned SoCon tournament Most Outstanding Player honors after scoring 65 points in three wins, including a career-high 34 points against UNC Greensboro in the semifinals. He finished the year as a second-team All-SoCon selection and set Furman's freshman scoring record with 601 total points.
In Furman's NCAA tournament loss to UConn, Wilkins scored 21 points, hit four 3-pointers and handed out four assists. That type of play against high-level competition is part of the reason why teams are so interested.
Miami needs proven guard production after losing Tre Donaldson (averaged 16.4 points and 5.7 assists per game) to the NBA draft and Tru Washington (averaged 11.9 points and four rebounds per game) to the portal.
In high school, Wilkins led his team to a state title, averaging 25.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists as a senior. He was not a heavily ranked national recruit.
