Purdue locked down Miami stars Tre Donaldson and Malik Reneau as the season ended for the Hurricanes with a 79-69 loss in the NCAA Tournament second round on Sunday. Reneau made six of his 15 shots from the field and all three of his three-point attempts while making all four free throws.
Reneau had five rebounds, three assists, four steals and a block but committed seven of the 12 Miami turnovers. Tre Donaldson and Tru Washington also struggled from the floor for Miami. Donaldson made four of his 15 shots from the floor and two of his six three-point shots. Washington was 5-13 from the field and 1-5 on three-point attempts.
After middling first halves in the NCAA Tournament first-round game against Missouri. Donaldson and Reneau took over against Missouri in the second half to lead Miami to victory. Donaldson and Reneau were never able to get going against Purdue.
After a back-and-forth first half, Donaldson scored at the halftime buzzer to give Miami a 40-38 halftime lead. Miami trailed and led by seven points in the first half. Reneau scored on a layup to start the second half and extend the Miami lead to 42-38.
Malik Reneau held below season averages
Reneau entered the game against Purdue averaging 19.0 points per game, 6.6 rebounds, 2.0 assist and 1.0 steal while shooting 54.5 percent from the field, 36.1 percent on three-point attempts and 78.4 percent from the free throw line with a 57.6 eFG percentage.
After making two of his eight shots in the first half, Reneau was four out of seven from the field in the second half. Donaldson made one of his nine shots in the second half and Washington connected on two out of six. Despite shooting more efficiently in the second half, Reneau had five of his seven turnovers after halftime.
Reneau scored 10 points in the second half, but Donaldson scored six, with three coming on free throws after halftime. Purdue shut down Reneau in the first half and Donaldson in the second 20 minutes, making it difficult for them to take over the game as they did against Missouri.
