Miami suffers heartbreaking last second loss to Florida State

Miami lost its second consecutive game for the first time this season with a heartbreaking last second defeat to Florida State on Tuesday.

Robert McCray V made two free throws with one second left as Florida State beat Miami 65-63 on Tuesday night at the Watsco Center. Florida State beat Miami for the sixth consecutive time and for the 15th time in the last 16 games. Miami honored former head coach Jim Larranaga on Tuesday night.

Miami lost its second consecutive game for the first time this season. Clemson beat Miami 69-59 on Saturday. The Hurricanes lost despite holding the lead for most of the first half. McCray led all scorers with 20 points. True freshman Shelton Henderson led four Miami players in double figures with 18 points.

Florida State took a 38-37 lead at the halftime buzzer on a three-point shot from Kobe Magee. Magee finished with six points. Miami led by as many as six points multiple times in the first half, but was never able to extend the lead beyond a half dozen.

Florida State held its biggest lead at 63-58 with 2:23 remaining in the game. Miami rallied to tie the score on a free throw by Malik Reneau with 20 seconds left. Reneau scored 16 points on seven of 13 from the field. Miami was unable to cut off the drive by McCray as he was fouled by Tre Donaldson.

What made the difference in a tight game?

In a game decided by the two late free throws, Florida State outscored Miami 20-5 off the bench. Florida State also made six of its 17 three-point attempts to four out of 16 for Miami. Chauncey Wiggins was the only other player in double figures for Florida State with 10 points.

Donaldson scored 10 for Miami and Ernest Udeh Jr. had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Hurricanes. Miami is back on the road on Saturday afternoon at Syracuse. Syracuse hosts Virginia Tech on Wednesday night.
