Miami edge-rusher Tyler Baron spent his first four seasons at Tennessee from 2020 through 2023, initially announced he was transferring to Mississippi in January 2024, flipped to Louisville for the spring semester and eventually wound up with in Coral Gables for the 2024 season.

If anyone understands the transfer portal it is Baron. Baron had 101 tackles, 28.0 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, 4.0 passes defended, 1.0 forced fumble and 1.0 fumble recovery returned for a TD during his four seasons with Tennessee. In his one season with Miami, Baron had 38 tackles, 11.0 TFLs, 5.5 sacks and 1.0 fumble recovery.

Baron was exceptional in five games against non-conference opponents with 14 tackles, 7.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks in 2024 including the Pop-Tarts bowl loss to Iowa State. In eight games versus ACC opponents in 2024, Baron had 24.0 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.0 fumble recovery.

Baron did not have nearly the same production versus Power Conference opponents other than Florida as he did versus Ball State, Florida A&M and South Florida. Baron had 3.0 tackles, 2.0 TFLs and 1.0 sack in Miami's 41-17 win over Florida, which was significant after the Hurricanes lost star Rueben Bain on the first series.

"For me it was a thing, I wanted to figure out what did schools do wrong? So for me, it was why not the U? I feel like the U did everything I needed. I feel like for any player that's coming in and looking for a school, if you look down at Coral Gables there's not gonna be a lot of places that offer what they offer.""

Baron worked under Pro Football Hall of Famer, Jason Taylor who is the Miami defensive line coach. Taylor is the only remaining assistant coach on the Miami defense entering the 2025 season. Defensive tackle David Blay, who was one of the most sought-after linemen in the portal, is the only transfer Miami has added up front on defense.

Blay will work with Miami national championship defensive tackle Damione Lewis, who was hired this month, in addition to Taylor as his defensive line coaches. With Lewis and Taylor on the Miami coaching staff, the Hurricanes should continue to attract blue-chip defensive linemen out of high school and as transfers.
