Getting a player who is already committed in-state to come play out-of-state for you is challenging, but that is not going to stop the Miami Hurricanes from trying their best to get this five-star. Although Jalen Brewster has been committed to Texas Tech since early October, it did not prevent Hurricanes defensive line coach Damione Lewis from taking a visit to see him over in Cedar Hill, Texas recently.

Here is the photo opportunity of Lewis showing Brewster it is all about The U from in the weight room.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Brewster is the No. 1 defensive line prospect in his class, the No. 3 overall player from Texas, and the No. 5 player nationally in the 2027 recruiting cycle. He has 28 official offers, but has not taken an official visit anywhere just yet. While it does not look like Miami is among those teams who has offered him, one would think that is surely coming in short order, right?

After landing Darian Mensah and Cooper Barkate in the portal, Miami is so in its bag with recruitment.

Miami is trying to flip five-star DL Jalen Brewster away from Texas Tech

Admittedly, this is going to be quite challenging for Miami to conceivably pull off. The Hurricanes are not one of the first teams to have offered Brewster out of high school. Arriving late to the recruiting party does not always work out. That being said, Miami carries a certain gravitas nationally, more so than Texas Tech even does in-state. That kind of pull could potentially be what brings him to Miami.

At Miami, we have seen first-hand how well Lewis and the rest of Mario Cristobal's coaching staff develops defensive linemen. Rueben Bain Jr. is a top-12 lock in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. One would think that his running mate in Akheem Mesidor coming off the edge will go top-32 in most estimations. Of course, Texas Tech was buoyed by its tenacious defense that Cody Campbell bought.

Overall, money is not really going to be an issue in Brewster's recruitment if it were to come down to power players like Miami and Texas Tech in that department. Both schools are showing it can develop defensive linemen to the caliber of contending for national championships and going in day one of the NFL Draft. It might come down to a matter of preference, but staying closer to home can win out.

For now, expect for Lewis and the rest of Cristobal's staff to put in the work to possibly flip Brewster.
