Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney limped off the field and headed into the medical tent during the Hurricanes' game against Florida State on Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium. It appeared to be a non-contact injury involving the lower leg, but he ended up returning to the field.

Toney, the sophomore who has been Miami's leading receiver this season, was back in for a subsequent play after the injury timeout. No further details on the nature or severity of the injury have been released, and it is not yet clear how much it will limit him for the remainder of the game.

Toney's season and recent history

Toney entered the Florida State game with 39 receptions for 604 yards and six touchdowns through five games. Those totals ranked among the highest in the FBS, and he was averaging 120.8 receiving yards per game. As a freshman in 2025 he led the nation with 109 catches for 1,211 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He has dealt with minor issues earlier this season. He experienced what coach Mario Cristobal called upper-body discomfort in the win at Wake Forest and briefly left the Clemson game after landing on his left shoulder on a diving catch. In both cases he returned and finished the game.

Toney has been the focal point of the Miami passing attack alongside quarterback Darian Mensah, who entered the game having thrown for 1,438 yards, 15 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Florida State has kept the game close as the Seminoles went into halftime tied 14-14 with the Hurricanes. Midway through the third quarter, Toney has seven receptions for 84 yards and one TD.

The injury comes on a night when Miami safety Zechariah Poyser was ejected for targeting and Bryce Fitzgerald left the game (but returned) after suffering an upper-body injury on FSU's opening possession.
