After catching six passes for 82 yards and a touchdown in the Miami season-opening 27-24 win over Notre Dame on Sunday night, Miami freshman wide receiver Malachi Toney was named the 247Sports National True Freshman of the Week.

Toney scored the first TD of the season for Miami on a 28-yard reception from Carson Beck. Beck and Toney quickly developed a rapport. Toney had four receptions for 59 yards and a TD in the first half. Toney led Miami in receptions, receiving yards and targets versus Notre Dame.

On the drive that gave Miami a 7-0 lead, Toney had three receptions for 52 yards. Toney, reclassified to the 2025 class, accomplished the National True Freshman of the Week, despite the fact that he will not be 18 until later this week. Toney had three receptions for 57 yards on third down, which is ninth nationally.

Despite being named the 247Sports National True Freshman of the Week, Toney did not earn the ACC Rookie of the Week. California freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who was also in the 2025 class, was named the ACC Rookie of the Week.

The four receptions Toney had for at least 10 yards is 35th nationally and is tied for first nationally among freshmen with Western Kentucky running back Marvis Parrish. Toney is on pace to have the best season for a Miami freshman WR since Ahmmon Richards in 2016.

Sagapolutele completed 20 passes, including his first nine consecutively, in 30 attempts for 234 yards and three touchdowns and added 30 rushing yards as California beat former Pac-12 rival Oregon State 34-15. California and Miami do not play during the 2025 season.

Miami hosts Bethune-Cookman and South Florida in the next two weeks before Toney and the Hurricanes have another chance to make a statement against Florida on September 20. Florida beat Long Island 55-0 in its season opener on Saturday.
