Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin put sophomore wideout Malachi Toney in rare company this week, saying Toney is the greatest receiver he has ever laid eyes on.
The remark came two days after Toney broke a 42-year-old school record in Miami's season-opening rout of Stanford.

Michael Irvin calls Malachi Toney the greatest receiver he has ever seen
Last season, Irvin compared Toney's feel for space to a slot version of Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce. Back in June he said Toney's freshman year was the best by a Miami wideout and added that the Liberty City product was more mature at 18 than Irvin had been at the same age.
On Friday night in Palo Alto, Toney caught 12 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns in No. 7 Miami's 45-6 victory over Stanford, breaking Eddie Brown's single-game school record of 220 receiving yards, set in 1984.
Darian Mensah threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns in his Hurricanes debut, and Toney hit the Heisman pose after each score.
As a true freshman in 2025, Toney led the FBS with 109 receptions, set Miami records with 1,211 receiving yards, scored 10 receiving touchdowns, and helped the Hurricanes reach the College Football Playoff national championship game. Irvin's own freshman season at Miami included 46 catches for 840 yards and nine touchdowns.
Irvin remains a die-hard Canes fan at his core. Each season he can be seen sweating out the final outcome on the sidelines like every game is for the national championship. He won a national title in 1987, then three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys, and he still talks about Miami like it's family. Some of his praise may seem hyperbolic because of that, but Toney may just be that great when his college career is over.
