Miami added depth and experience to its 2025 secondary with Michigan State cornerback Charles Brantley on Saturday. Brantley and projected returnees Damari Brown and O.J. Frederique provide Miami and three 2025 signees projected to give the Hurricanes a much deeper group of CBs next season.
Brantley had 103 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, five interceptions and 23 pass breakups in four seasons at Michigan State. After a season-ending injury after three games in 2023, Brantley played in and started in nine contests for Michigan State in 2024.
Brantley had 27 tackles, 1.5 TFL and seven pass breakups in 2024. In 2022 Brantley had a career-high 48 tackles, 2.0 TFLs, 1.0 sack. one interception and seven PBUs. Per Gaby Urrutia of Inside the U, Brantley "was targeted 38 times and allowed just 14 catches for just 149 yards with a long of 27 yards" in 2024.
Brantley was lost for the season after nine games in 2024 but is expected to be ready for spring practice per Urrutia. Miami has been active in the secondary adding talent to its 2025 roster. Zechariah Poyser of Jacksonville State, the second-ranked transfer safety committed to Miami earlier this week.
Miami also received projections from 247Sports and On3 for Wisconsin CB Xavier Lucas. There were reports on Saturday that Wisconsin is holding up Lucas' paperwork and/or that he has yet to officially enter the transfer portal. Adding Lucas with Brantley, Brown and Frederique would be a significant upgrade for Miami at CB.
Brown missed all but the season-opening win at Florida and the regular-season finale at Syracuse this season. Miami also signed an elite group of four-star CBs in the 2025 class with Jaboree Antonie Chris Ewald and Amari Wallace in the 2025 class. Miami is just getting started adding transfers to its 2025 roster.
