Through a quarter and a half, Miami has checked off every box it needed to against Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl. The defensive line play has been terrific, harassing Julian Sayin in the pocket and keeping the Buckeyes from opening up the downfield passing game.
But the defense needed more than sacks, they needed turnovers and Keionte Scott provided the biggest play of the game thus far, a 72-yard interception return for a touchdown that gave the Hurricanes a 14-0 lead.

Scott read the play immediately, seeing that Sayin wanted to go to Brandon Inniss on a quick hitter and jumped the route so quickly, Sayin didn't see him and by the time he threw the ball, Scott was in perfect position to make a play.
And to make matters worse, Scott clearly turns his head to say something to the Buckeyes bench. This overhead angle shows how keyed into the play Scott was.

Scott, who was thought to be done for the season with a foot injury in mid-November, returned to the field in the CFP first-round game against Texas A&M and has looked every bit like the All-American defensive back he was trending to be before the injury.
Against the Aggies, Scott was everywhere. He led the Hurricanes with 10 tackles, and had two sacks and three tackles for loss. As great as Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor have been up front, it can be argued that Scott is the MVP on the defense this season. Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal calls Scott a "total team player." Scott, who was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe award, had five pass breakups this season and is one of two defensive backs in the country with five sacks.
And if Miami holds win to advance to the CFP semifinals, it's going to be because of Scott's ability to make the big play.
