Most of Todd McShay's draft analysis revolves around the quarterbacks this time of year, so when a non-quarterback reaches his radar, you know it's a special player.
And as McShay was doing his film breakdown of the Miami-FSU game this Saturday, he couldn't help but look at the havoc that Rueben Bain has caused this season. When McShay appeared on the "God Bless Football" podcast with Jon "Stugotz" Weiner, the former ESPN personality couldn't wait to tell everyone his thoughts on the Miami defensive end.
"I don't know that he's going to be the number one overall pick...[Oklahoma quarterback] John Mateer, before the hand injury, was the guy....but if you're talking about the best player right now, I might go with Rueben Bain at Miami," McShay exclaimed. "I mean he's not a burner off the edge, but everything he has translates to the NFL game. It's power, bend, relentless motor. He is a nightmare to deal with.
It feels like Saturday is going to be a big money game for Bain, another primetime game against a state rival, but also an opportunity to see if his game translates to a road contest against an offensive line that has experience and will play nasty to frustrate him.

The man that pulls the strings
McShay's superlatives didn't stop with Bain. He is also a big fan of new defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman. The 42-year-old is in his first year with the Hurricanes and so far he's making all the right moves. McShay said that Hetherman has risen up the ranks the hard way, taking on challenges in places that other young coaches wouldn't go.
"Cristobal made the right call. This guy was [coached in] NFL Europe, Maine, James Madison, Minnesota...like hard-nosed places when you had to overachieve. And then he comes to Miami, and he's getting the most out of these guys. They are playing a good brand of football together," McShay concluded.
