The Carolina Panthers waived rookie wide receiver Jacolby George on Monday as part of their first wave of moves to trim the roster to 53, the team announced. George was among 17 players waived, with veteran kicker Matthew Wright released in a separate move. The NFL’s cut-down deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.

George, who signed with Carolina as an undrafted free agent in May after a standout career at Miami, appeared in all three preseason games. He finished August with two receptions for 19 yards, while logging 8, 3 and 20 offensive snaps across the three contests.
The Panthers’ receiver competition was crowded throughout camp. Carolina’s latest depth charts and projections have consistently centered on Tetairoa McMillan, Adam Thielen and Xavier Legette atop the rotation, with roles for Jalen Coker, Hunter Renfrow, Jimmy Horn Jr., David Moore and Brycen Tremayne also in the mix. George’s path required either a special-teams role or a late-preseason surge that didn’t materialize.
As a first-year player, George is subject to waivers. If unclaimed by another club, he becomes eligible to sign with a practice squad beginning Wednesday at noon — a common route for rookie UDFAs who flashed enough during camp and/or preseason. George is a reasonable practice-squad candidate if he clears waivers.
George leaves camp after a productive two-year run in Coral Gables. He posted 57 catches for 864 yards and eight touchdowns in 2023, then followed with 53 for 752 and eight in 2024, finishing his UM career Top-10 all-time in receiving yards (1,929). He signed with Carolina in May as one of 19 UDFAs the club added ahead of rookie minicamp.
The Panthers still have additional moves to make before Tuesday’s deadline. But for now, George’s stint in Charlotte pauses at the wire — with a plausible next step back in the building on the practice squad or a fresh opportunity if another team puts in a claim.
