Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza has every right to hold a grudge against the Miami football program. Like any kid growing up in Miami, Mendoza always dreamed of playing at the next level for the Miami Hurricanes.

Mendoza attended Columbus High School, the same school that produced Mario Cristobal and other Miami greats such as Alonzo Highsmith and Carlos Huerta. Mendoza attended all of the football camps and showcases that he could, especially ones held by Florida schools such as UM and Florida State.

Unfortunately, despite Mendoza's best efforts, his dream never came to be. The three-star prospect received just six scholarship offers, including one from nearby FIU. Mendoza originally committed to play for Yale, but after reconsideration, he committed to the one power conference school that saw something in him, California.

Mendoza was rightfully heartbroken to learn that the Miami Hurricanes, led then by Manny Diaz, didn't think he was good enough. At the ACC Media Days before the 2024 season, Mendoza spoke about that feeling.

"[They said] we might take you as a walk-on... that lit a fire under me. And that was a sad night, it was kind of the realization like, hey... I'm not going to be a Miami football player. "

Mendoza has since moved on. While many athletes in his position would never forgive Miami for passing them up, Mendoza still holds a deep respect for the program. Speaking on being snubbed from both Miami and Florida State, Mendoza told reporters:

"In the past we've done a couple of photoshoots... someone has told me to like, hold the spear and pretend to break it, or put the upside-down U... I would never do any of that stuff."

Mendoza has taken his opportunity with the Cal Golden Bears in stride. As a true freshman in 2023, he led the program to its first Bowl Game since 2019. As a sophomore in 2024, he's led his squad to a 3-1 record through four games, with his biggest accomplishment being a road win over Auburn.

Because Miami and Cal are now rivals within the ACC, they'll become regular opponents, beginning with a matchup in Berkeley on Saturday. That allows Mendoza to host his hometown team in what will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable games of his entire career.

At a media availability this week, beat reporter Cody Henderson for The League Winners asked Mendoza about how he feels going into the game.

"My body's feeling great, my mindset's feeling great, especially with the bye week... So, the entire offense is very excited, the team is very excited, and I'm very excited."

Despite Mendoza's excitement, it hasn't been easy for him lately. His offensive line has given up 13 sacks over the previous two games, and with Rueben Bain Jr. set to return to the Miami defense, it could be a long day for Mendoza and his offensive line.

FanDuel lists Miami as a 10.5-point favorite against Cal. While the Hurricanes should be able to take care of business in Berkeley, Fernando Mendoza will be looking to pull off an upset he'll remember for the rest of his life.
