Cam Ward continues to pile preseason honors with Walter Camp POY watch list
Miami quarterback Cam Ward continued to be recognized early in his Hurricanes' career being named to the Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list. Ward was previously named to the Maxwell Award watch list, the ACC Preseason Player of the Year and first-team All-ACC QB.
Ward transferred to Miami from Washington State in January. The Pac-12 named Ward Honorable Mention All-Confererence in 2022 and 2023. Before transferring to Washington State, Ward played two seasons for FCS Incarnate Word in San Antonio. The Walter Camp Player of the Year has been awarded since 1967.
Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992 are the only two Miami players named the Walter Camp Player of the Year. Testaverde and Torretta are the only Miami players to win the Heisman Trophy. The award is named in honor of Walter Camp, an early developer of football.
Ward is one of eight Miami players to be honored on preseason watch lists. Edge rusher Rueben Bain, kicker Andres Borregales, defensive back Jaden Harris, running back Damien Martinez, linebacker Francisco Mauigoa, left tackle Jalen Rivers and wide receiver Xavier Restrepo are also on preseason watch lists.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year will announce three semifinalists in early November and three finalists on November 26. The Walter Camp Player of the Year will be announced at ESPN’s College Football Awards Show on December 12. All 133 FBS head coaches vote on the Walter Camp POY.
To win the Walter Camp POY, a player does not need to be on the preseason watch list. Earlier this summer, Borregales was named the second-team kicker on the Walter Camp preseason All-American team. Borregales is on the preseason watch list for the Groza Award.
Ward led five Miami players named preseason All-ACC. Bain, Borregales, Mauigoa and Restrepo were also named first-team All-ACC. The addition of Ward is a major reason Miami is picked third in the ACC and 19th in the preseason USA Today Coaches poll released on Monday.
