Cam Ward helping recruit Miami football transfers
After transferring from Washington State, quarterback Cam Ward has elevated the Miami football program since arriving in Coral Gables in January. Ward has emerged as a team leader helping the Miami staff recruit transfers. Ward is one of nine transfers Miami added during the early window in December and January.
Center Zach Carpenter, quarterback Reese Poffenbarger and Ward are the only transfers Miami added on the offense. The addition of Ward is expected to help Miami during the spring transfer portal window that opened on Tuesday and lasts through April 30. Players can decide on their next program after April 30.
Miami is considered the favorite to add Oregon State 2,000-yard rusher Damien Martinez as a transfer. Houston wide receiver Sam Brown was reportedly working out with Ward in Houston. Miami needs to add a RB after losing Tre'Vonte Citizen and Henry Parrish as transfers and the uncertainty with Mark Fletcher's foot injury.
Martinez would be a huge boost to the Miami offense and a favorite to start even if Fletcher is healthy. Brown has 103 receptions for 1,286 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons with Houston. Brown had a breakout season for Houston during their first year in the Big XII with 62 receptions for 815 yards and three TDs in 2024.
"“I get myself involved a lot...I want guys that will come play for coach [Mario] Cristobal. Obviously I want some good players around me. We are going to get the right guys in here this summer. I think you’ll see a different Hurricanes team this fall.” "

Adding a RB and WR are priorities for Miami during the spring transfer portal window. All of Miami's returning scholarship RBs are freshmen or sophomores in eligibility. Xavier Restrepo and Jacolby George, who led Miami in receiving in 2023, plus junior Isaiah Horton, are the only experienced players at the position for Miami in 2024.
Brown and Martinez would be huge boosts to the 2024 Miami offense. With Ward hosting and working with some of the athletes, Miami should be able to attract the transfers they target. Ward is the type of magnetic player that transfers will want to play with. The next few weeks should be busy for Miami in the transfer portal.
