Cam Ward named among 10 2024 college football transfers with biggest impact
Paul Myerberg of USA Today named Miami quarterback Cam Ward one of "The 10 college football transfers that will have the biggest impact." Myerberg listed the transfers in no particular order. Ward is the only incoming ACC transfer on Myerberg's list and one of four QBs.
Ohio State and Oregon make up half of Myerberg's list. The Buckeyes have defensive back Caleb Downs, quarterback Will Howard and running back Quidshon Jenkins on the list. Oregon has cornerback Jabbar Muhammad and quarterback Dillon Gabriel on Myerberg's list.
The other programs with Top 10 impactful transfers per Myerberg are Mississippi, Notre Dame Texas and Texas A&M. Miami does not play any of the nine impactful transfers in 2024. Per the 247Sports team rankings, Miami will play Florida which has the fifth-best transfer class and Florida State which is seventh.
Ward is the highest-ranked 2024 Miami transfer in a class that ranks 10th. Ward is one of the most experienced 2024 transfers. Before he transferred to Miami. Ward played two seasons at Washington State and two at FCS Incarnate Word in San Antonio.
"QB Cam Ward, Miami (Washington State)
- Paul Myerberg, USA Today
Ward considered entering this year's draft but eventually landed with the Hurricanes, giving Mario Cristobal's program a huge boost at a position of dire need after two disappointing seasons. A former Championship Subdivision standout at Incarnate Word, the senior threw for 48 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in two seasons at Washington State and has the athleticism to bring a new flavor to Miami's underachieving offense."
Ward is the third-ranked 2024 transfer QB behind Julian Sayin at Ohio State and Adrian Chiles at Michigan State. Sayin will back up Howard at Ohio State and Chiles attempted only 35 passes for Oregon State last season. Ward should be the most impactful transfer QB in 2024.
Ward threw for 6,968 yards in two seasons at Washington State. Oregon State transfer running back Damien Martinez will also have a big impact on Miami in 2024. Martinez will take a lot of the pressure off of Ward to carry the Miami offense like he did at Washington State. Ward accounted for 76.68 percent of Washington State's 2024 yards.
Washington State finished 130th out of 133 FBS teams in 2023 averaging 84.83 rushing yards per game. Martinez was 19th nationally averaging 98.75 rushing yards per game. Martinez and Ward should be the most impactful transfer tandem nationally in 2024.
