Damien Martinez picks up second preseason watch list being named to Walker Award
Miami running back Damien Martinez was named to his second preseason watch list when he was honored by the Doak Walker Award on Tuesday, Martinez was previously named to the Maxwell Award preseason watch list. The Walker Award named 87 players and 15 from the ACC to its preseason watch list.
Martinez was 18th nationally in 2023 averaging 98.75 rushing yards per game. During his two seasons at Oregon State Martinez was named first-team All Pac-12. Martinez won Pac-12 Offensive Rookie of the Year running for 982 yards, leading all freshmen nationally and seven touchdowns in 2022.
In 2023 Martinez ran for 1,185 yards, 11 TDs and became a valuable receiver with 11 receptions 126 yards. Martinez had 12 100-yard games during his two seasons at Oregon State. Martinez will be the lead running back for Miami in 2024. At 6'2 and 232 pounds, Martinez is an ideal combination of size and speed.
Miami has never had a Doak Walker Award winner. Wisconsin is the leader with five Doak Walker Award winners. The SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name 10 semifinalists in November. Three finalists, voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will be announced later in November.
After the finalists are announced, the Doak Walker Award winner will be voted on in December. The Doak Walker Award will be announced at the ESPN College Football Awards show on December 12. Six more awards watch lists will be announced between now and Tuesday.
The Fred Biletnikoff for the best wide receiver nationally will be announced on Wednesday, the Davey O'Brien Award for the best quarterback will come out on Thursday, the John Mackey Award for best tight end and Dave Rimington for best center is released on Friday.
After a break this weekend, the Chuck Bednarik Award for best defensive players will be announced on Monday and the Dick Butkus Award for best linebacker will be released on Tuesday. Expect Xavier Restrepo to be on the Biletnikoff Watch List and Cam Ward on the O'Brien Award watch list.
