How Malachi Toney de-commitment affects 2025 Miami class

Miami is down to one wide receiver commitment in the 2025 class after four-star prospect Malachi Toney de-committed from the Hurricanes per multiple reports. Four-star Phenix City Central, Alabama prospect Daylyn Upshaw is the lone remaining WR committed to Miami in the 2025 class.

Toney who reclassified from the 2026 to 2025 class had been committed to Miami since August 2023. Toney is the 215th prospect, 25th WR and 34th player in Florida in the 2025 class out of Plantation American Heritage. Ohio State is the new leader for Toney with a 54.0 percent chance for a commitment per On3.

John Garcia of Rivals.Com projected that Alabama may be the team to beat for Toney. Hayes Fawcett of On3 reported Alabama, Florida State and Oregon are the three schools standing out to Toney. With just over two months until the Early National Signing Period, a lot could happen with Toney's recruitment.

Toney has 122 receptions for 1,979 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns during his high school career. This season has been Toney's best with 38 receptions for 585 yards and he has already tied his career high with eight TD catches. Toney is listed at 5'10.5 and 182 pounds by 247Sports.

Upshaw is reportedly a player to watch. Upshaw has taken multiple visits to Auburn throughout his recruitment. Miami is still listed with a 90 percent chance for Upshaw. Expect Auburn and Miami to be the two schools Upshaw considers through the Early National Signing Period.

Upshaw has 110 receptions for 2,105 yards and 28 TDs in his high school career. As a senior, Upshaw has 21 receptions for 478 yards and 10 TDs through five games. Toney is the second 2025 WR to de-commit from Miami. Waden Charles is now committed to Central Florida after previously being committed to Miami.

All of the WRs who took official visits to Miami this summer are committed elsewhere. Mario Cristobal and his staff are still recruiting several high-profile 2025 WRs hard. Miami could look in the transfer portal if they get shutout at WR. Miami added Sam Brown as a transfer from Houston this season.

Jacolby George and Xavier Restrepo are playing their last seasons with Miami in 2024. Miami signed four-star WRs Ny Carr, Chance Robinson and JoJo Trader in the 2024 class. Carr, Robinson and Trader have not made an impact as true freshmen. Carr, Robinson and Trader project to have bright futures with Miami.
