Kiko Mauigoa and Cam Ward name their Miami football Rushmores
Speaking to the ACC Network during ACC Kickoff on Wednesday quarterback Cam Ward and linebacker Francisco Mauigoa named their Miami football Mount Rushmores. Mauigoa and Ward agreed on two of the four players on their Mount Rushmores.
Mauigoa and Ward both named linebacker Ray Lewis and wide receiver Michael Irvin on their Miami Mount Rushmores. Safety Ed Reed and WR Reggie Wayne were the other two on Mauigoa's Mount Rushmore. Kick returner Devin Hester and WR Andre Johnson were the other two players on Ward's Mount Rushmore.
Lewis is sixth in Miami history with 388 tackles. Lewis holds the top two seasons for Miami with 160 tackles in 1995 and 152 in 1994. Dan Morgan and Nate Webster have come the closest to Lewis with 150 tackles each in 1998 and 1999. Lewis was a third-team All-American in 1994 and first-team in 1995.
Irvin leads Miami with 26 career touchdowns, is sixth with 143 career receptions and is third with 2,423 receiving yards. Irvin will likely be passed this season on the career reception and receiving yardage chart by Xavier Restrepo. Restrepo enters the 2024 season with 131 career receptions and 1,717 receiving yards.
Johnson is 29th in Miami history with 92 career receptions, 11th with 1,831 receiving yards and tied for fourth with Stacey Coley and Wayne with 20 career TDs. Wayne is second in Miami history with 173 receptions and 2,510 career yards. Mike Harley holds the Miami record with 182 receptions and Santana Moss is first with 2,547 receiving yards.
Hester is arguably the most electrifying kick returner in history. During his Miami career, Hester was a First-team All-American in 2004 and named First-team All-ACC in 2004 and 2005. Hester had four punt return TDs, two on kickoff returns and one from a blocked field goal during his Miami career.
Reed holds Miami career records with 21 interceptions, four returned for TDs and 389 return yards. Reed was a consensus All-American in 2000 and a unanimous All-American during Miami's 2001 National Championship Season. The College Football Hall of Fame inducted Reed in 2018.
Naming a Miami Mount Rushmore is a difficult task. Among the players left off the list by Mauigoa and Ward are the Hurricanes' two Heisman Trophy Winners Vinny Testaverde and Gino Torretta. Several other Miami national award winners were not mentioned. Miami also ranks third All-time producing Pro Football Hall of Famers.
