Kyshawn George highest Miami basketball draftee since 2018, 24th overall to NYK
Kyshawn George is the highest-drafted player in the Miami basketball program since 2018. The New York Knicks selected George with the 24th pick in the first round. George averaged 7.6 points per game, 3.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and shot 42.6 percent from the floor, 40.8 percent on three-point attempts and 77.8 percent from the free throw line.
George is the highest-drafted Miami player since Lonnie Walker was selected 18th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks are an experienced team deep with perimeter players who will allow George time to develop. Expect George to spend time with the Westchester Knicks in the G-League.
Scouts like the length George brings on the perimeter and his shooting ability. George has a lot of room to develop. George grew three inches from when Miami signed him in the spring of 2023 to the end of his freshman season. The addition of George provides the Knicks with more length on the perimeter.
New York added veteran 6'6 wing Mikal Bridges in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets earlier this week. The Knicks also signed 6'7 and 240-pound small forward O.G. Anunoby to a $212 million extension this week. It will be difficult for George to find a path to playing time as a rookie.
George is the sixth first round pick in the history of the Miami basketball program. Rick Barry was the fourth pick by the San Francisco Warriors in 1965, Tim James went 25th to the Heat in 1999, John Salmons 26th to the San Antonio Spurs in 2002, Shane Larkin 18th to the Atlanta Hawks in 2013 and Walker.
The 2025 NBA Draft is projected to be the first time Miami has players selected in the first round of consecutive NBA Draft. Incoming freshman Jalil Bethea is projected to be a 2025 NBA Lottery pick. Guard Nijel Pack and forward Matthew Cleveland are other potential 2025 NBA Draftees from Miami.
