Mario Cristobal stated the Miami football program will be active in the transfer portal this spring during a Friday appearance on the Joe Rose Show on WQAM. The spring transfer portal opens from April 16–30. The spring transfer portal window is after the conclusion of spring practice nationally.

The positions to watch Miami target in the spring transfer portal are cornerback, offensive line and outside wide receiver. Miami needs to add depth at CB and potentially a starter at left guard and WR. Spring practice will provide Cristobal and his coaching staff time to evaluate the Miami roster needs.

Cristobal made a point of changing the culture of the Miami football program a priority when he was hired in December 2021. Spring will be big for WR Isaiah Horton and several offensive linemen with a chance to position themselves as starters entering the off-season. Miami needs to add depth at CB.

Miami added several transfers through the portal during the 2023 spring window. Miami has signed five five-star players in the last two classes. The 247Sports team talent composite had Miami 12th in the 2023 rankings. With consecutive top 10 classes, Miami should continue to move up the team talent rankings.

" “Absolutely, without a doubt...We’ve done a really good job in continuing to upgrade the caliber of player and character and talent on the roster. And that’s not going to stop, because we’re not where we want to be yet. But there’s so much enthusiasm because we have gained a lot of ground. Spring football — let’s find out who can play, who can’t play and go from there make our decisions and go from there... NIL, if they’re really good, they’re going to make money. Twenty-six new players have arrived; 10 more have signed and will enroll in the months ahead."

The addition of quarterback Cam Ward is expected to elevate the play for Miami offensively. Horton provides Miami with height at 6'4 but is not very experienced. If an experienced and productive WR becomes available, expect Miami to pursue him. The same is true for an interior OL.

Miami has brought in leaders through the transfer portal in Cristobal's first two seasons. Center Matt Lee had a big impact as a leader in 2023. Ward has reportedly taken on the role of a leader in his two months in Coral Gables. Cristobal will target players who fit into the culture that he expects for Miami.
