Mario Cristobal stated immediately in his postgame press conference that the 39-38 comeback win by Miami at California on Saturday night into Sunday morning was the best example of resiliency and toughness that he has been fortunate enough to be a part of. Miami rallied from a 35-10 third quarter deficit.

The offense had three consecutive touchdown drives in the fourth quarter for the second consecutive week and the defense was exceptional in the fourth quarter after giving up too many big plays in the opening 45 minutes. Miami had a second consecutive comeback from double digit points down in the fourth quarter.

California led 35-18 after three quarters and had outgained Miami 334-397. Miami outgained California 278-26 and outscored the Golden Bears 21-3 in the fourth quarter. Cam Ward was 15-22-for 238 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the fourth quarter alone.

Miami forced two punts and an interception on California's final three drives. The Miami defense was inconsistent all night. Miami forced three three-and-outs before the last three drives were five plays or less. Cal punted and then through an interception to ice the game for Miami.

"The best way to sum it up it's the best example of resiliency and toughness and just no quit mentality that I've ever been fortunate enough to be a part of. I mean the game was 35-10 at one point and all that you saw was guys saying we're going to do this. You know because we can do it and they did and just kept clawing and scratching the defense started you know holding up getting us the ball back and well you guys saw the rest."

Explosive plays staked California to the big lead. California had four plays that went for more than 50 yards to take the 35-10 lead. Two of those went for touchdowns and Cal had a 40-yard interception return for a TD. Miami flipped the script igniting their comeback.

Ward had a 24-yard TD run to get Miami within 38-32 with 4:04 remaining. Ward completed a 77-yard pass to Xavier Restrepo on the final drive that set Miami up for the game-winning TD. Miami scored five plays later on a Ward to Elijah Arroyo five-yard touchdown pass.
