Mario Cristobal gives injury updates for Rueben Bain and Damari Brown
Mario Cristobal said after the win over Florida on Saturday edge rusher Rueben Bain and cornerback Damari Brown have soft tissue injuries per Manny Navarro of The Athletic. Bain left the game during the first defensive series. Brown left later in the game. Miami played great defensively without Bain and Brown.
Miami had eight tackles for loss, two sacks, held Florida to 261 yards in total offense, 122 passing yards and 139 rushing. Florida averaged 4.8 yards per play, 4.69 yards per pass attempt and 5.0 yards per carry. Florida running back Montrell Johnson had a 71-yard TD run that significantly boosted Florida's offensive numbers.
Take away Johnson's long TD run and Florida finished with 190 total yards and 27 carries for 68 yards. Johnson finished with 11 carries for 106 yards. Without his TD run, Johnson had 10 carries for 35 yards. The second-longest run for Johnson was 13 yards.
With Bain out Tyler Baron had three tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack. Elijah Alston also recorded three tackles and had 1.5 tackles for loss, a 0.5 sack and a pass breakup. Bain did not get on the score sheet. Brown finished the game with one tackle.
With Brown out, CB Jaidus Richard had five tackles, Mishael Powell had two tackles and a 67-yard interception return, Darryl Porter Jr. had two tackles and a pass breakup and true freshman O.J. Frederique had two tackles. With Florida A&M and Ball State the next two weeks, Bain and Brown can take their time returning.
Bain was the 2023 ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year. Brown was a key reserve in 2023. Brown played in 10 games in 2023 and started in the final three contests of the season. The starting CBs for Miami were Brown and Porter Jr. Without Bain, Miami has Alston, Baron and Akheem Mesidor at edge rusher.
