Mario Cristobal Miami and Oregon pre-season team rankings
Mario Cristobal earned his first power five head coaching job in 2018 at Oregon. The Ducks were ranked in the Associated Press Preseason Top 25 in all four years with Cristobal as head coach. Miami began the 2022 season in the AP Top 25 but was not ranked in the 2023 preseason poll.
Oregon began the 2018 season 24th in the Associated Press Top 25. The Ducks received 148 points in the 2018 preseason poll. Oregon finished the 2018 season 9-4 overall and 5-4 in the Pac 12. Washington and Washington State finished 7-2, two games ahead of Oregon in the Pac 12 North.
Oregon began the 2019 season 11th in the AP Top 25. The Ducks had 860 points in the 2019 preseason poll. Oregon had its most successful season under Cristobal in 2019. The Ducks finished 12-2, 8-1 in the Pac 12, won the conference championship game and beat Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.
Oregon's only two 2019 losses were to Bo Nix and Auburn at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas to begin the season and Arizona State in November. Oregon had wins over number five Utah in the Pac-12 title game and Wisconsin was ranked seventh entering the Rose Bowl. Oregon finished 2019 fifth in both major polls.
Oregon began the 2020 season ranked ninth in the AP Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Poll. The loss of star quarterback Justin Herbert caused Oregon to finish 4-3. After beginning their Pac-12-only schedule with three consecutive wins, Oregon lost three of their last four games to finish 4-3.
Oregon entered the 2020 season as the favorite to win the Pac-12 title. The one win for Oregon in their final four 2020 games was a 31-24 victory at USC in the Pac-12 championship game. Oregon finished 25th in the final 2020 Associated Press Top 25.
Oregon began the 2021 season ranked 11th in the AP Top 25. North Carolina was 10th, only 31 points ahead of Oregon. In their final season under Cristobal, Oregon finished 9-4. Oregon began the 2021 season 4-0. The 4-0 start included a win at Ohio State. Oregon was 9-1 after a November win over Washington State.
Oregon lost twice to Utah in its final three games under Cristobal. Utah beat fourth-ranked Oregon 38-7 in Salt Lake City and won two weeks later 38-10 in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Cristobal did not coach in Oregon's 47-32 loss in the Alamo Bowl to Oklahoma. Miami hired Cristobal three weeks before the Alamo Bowl.
Hopes were high for Miami entering their first season under Cristobal. Miami began the 2022 season ranked 16th in the AP Top 25. Miami rose as high as 13th in the AP Top 25 before a three-game losing streak dropped them out of the poll permanently during the 2022 season.
Miami was not ranked until week three of 2023. After a 4-0 start in 2023, Miami was ranked 17th. After consecutive losses to Georgia Tech and North Carolina to begin ACC play in 2023, Miami was out of the poll for the remainder of the 2023 season. Miami is expected to begin the 2024 season ranked in the teens of the AP Top 25.
