Mario Cristobal said scrimmage belonged to offense with good physicality from both.
After the defense reportedly had the better of the play during the first week of training camp, the Miami offense countered in a big-time way on Saturday per head coach Mario Cristobal. No stats were provided, but Cristobal told Miami radio analyst Don Bailey Jr. the offense was sparked by their third-down play.
Cristobal did not name any players specifically, but said the offense adjusted to the speed of the defense on Saturday. The success of the offense on third down during the scrimmage is encouraging. Cristobal told reporters on Thursday that Miami would work on situational football during the scrimmage.
Cristobal specifically said Miami would work on third downs, red zone, short yardage, goal line and possibly a two-minute drill. Third downs were the only part of situational football Cristobal mentioned to Bailey Jr. Cristobal was also pleased with the physicality on the line of scrimmage from the offense and defense.
The defense created a lot of negative plays and really pressured the quarterback throughout the week of practice per Cristobal. The defense "did a good job stuffing out our receivers and tight ends and coverage and today the offense they created more separation more air and...they made more plays."
Cristobal stated the defense did make plays too during the scrimmage. Cristobal also praised the opportunity to work on special teams. Getting the work in today was the most important thing per Cristobal. Miami also worked on the three-deep rotations during the Saturday scrimmage.
Miami was having a family barbeque after the game that provided players the opportunity to meet with their families for an hour. Miami will return to practice on Monday. The season opener is three weeks from today at Florida. Expect Miami to break training camp in two weeks to work on Florida the week before the game.
