Miami remains the third seed in the post-week five 12-team College Football Playoff rankings predictions. The Hurricanes dropped one spot in the Associated Press Top 25 and rose in the USA Today coaches poll to eighth in both rankings. Miami's win over Virginia Tech on Friday night was discussed throughout college football.
Miami needed a referee reversal of a Virginia Tech hail Mary to emerge with a 38-34 win. The Hurricanes also dropped from seventh to 10th in the ESPN Football Power Index. Winning the ACC is the only thing that matters for Miami in the College Football Playoff discussion as the top four conference champions earn byes.
Miami moves on to California this weekend. ESPN College Gameday will be in Berkeley for the first time ever ahead of the Hurricanes and Golden Bears. With a record of 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC, California needs a win to remain in the conference race. Miami needs to win to remain in the top 10 nationally.
FanDuel lists Miami as a 12.5-point favorite, and the ESPN Football Power Index projects Miami with a 71.7 percent chance of winning. Miami fell three spots to 10th in the FPI and is eighth in both national polls. As the top-ranked team in the ACC, Miami is the projected third seed in the College Football Playoff.

Other results this weekend slightly shook up the College Football Playoff projections. Alabama vaults five spots from sixth to first after their win over Georgia. The Crimson Tide had to come back after losing a 28-0 lead to win 41-34. Alabama's win over Georgia is the best for any team this season.
Losses by Mississippi at Kentucky and Utah versus Arizona also shook up the rankings. Mississippi remains in the projected College Football Playoff as the last at-large team. Utah drops out of the College Football Playoff and is replaced by Iowa State as the highest ranked Big XII team.
There is potential for more shake-ups this week. UNLV who is the projected Group of Five representative hosts Syracuse. The Rebels have the opportunity to earn their third win this season over a Power Conference opponent. Missouri at Texas A&M is the only game between two top 25 teams this week.
