Miami adds needed DL depth flipping 3-star Mykah Newton from NC State

The Miami football program added their second defensive lineman in the 2025 class by flipping three-star prospect Mykah Newton from NC State on Friday.

The Miami football program added its second 2025 edge rusher flipping three-star prospect Mykah Newton from North Carolina State on Friday. Miami previously had a commitment from three-star edge rusher Herbert Scroggins in June. Three-star defensive lineman Donta Simpson committed to Miami earlier this month.

Newton is the 822nd prospect, 63rd edge rusher and 109th player in Florida in the 2025 class out of Newberry. Miami offered Newton in July and hosted him at their end-of-the-summer bash per Gaby Urrutia of Inside the U. Urrutia reported Miami plans to move Newton inside.

Steve Wiltfong, the Vice President of Recruiting and Transfer Portal for On3 called Newton disruptive. Newton has 152 tackles., 45.0 tackles for loss, 27.0 sacks, 16.0 quarterback hurries, 2.0 passes defended, 3.0 fumble recoveries and 5.0 forced fumbles in three seasons of high school.

Newton told Urrutia and Wiltfong the opportunity to work with Pro Football Hall of Fame Defensive Line coach Jason Taylor was a major reason he chose Miami. Newton took official visits to Central Florida, Connecticut, North Carolina State and Michigan State in June.

The 2025 Miami class is 10th in the 247Sports composite rankings and 12th in the On3 rankings. Neither rankings include Newton. Miami projects to remain 10th in the 247Sports composite rankings with the addition of Newton to their 2025 class. Miami has the top-ranked 2025 class in the ACC.

Newton is the 11th defensive commit in the 2025 Miami class. The 247Sports rankings have Newton as the 17th-best prospect in the 2025 Miami class and 11th on defense. Miami has four blue-chip prospects on offense and five on defense in the 2025 class. Miami is still searching for its first 2025 five-star commit.

Four-star safety Bryce Fitzgerald will announce between Florida, Florida State, LSU, and Miami at 9 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday afternoon. Miami currently has commitments from four-star safeties Hylton Stubbs and Amari Wallace in the 2025 class.
