Miami baseball loses sixth straight ACC series at Georgia Tech

The Miami baseball team lost its sixth consecutive ACC series with a 17-1 defeat at Georgia Tech on Sunday.

After winning the opening game of the 6-4 on Friday, the Miami baseball team lost 9-4 on Saturday and 17-1 on Sunday to drop its sixth consecutive ACC series this weekend. Miami won its midweek game 5-2 versus Florida Atlantic on Tuesday. Miami fell to 19-24 overall and 8-16 in the ACC with the loss on Sunday.

After scoring single runs in the first and second innings on Sunday, Georgia Tech erupted for five runs in the third inning, six in the fourth and four in the fifth to lead 17-1. The game was scoreless after that with a Georgia Tech run ruling Miami after seven innings to earn the series win. J.D. Urso had the only hit for Miami.

Georgia Tech third baseman John Giesler had three hits in four at-bats with four runs scored and five RBIs on Sunday. The first four Miami pitchers allowed runs on Sunday. Starter Herrick Hernandez allowed six runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings in the series decider.

Miami rallied in the series opener after falling behind 3-1 after four innings. The Hurricanes tied it at three with two runs in the top of the fifth. Georgia Tech regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Miami scored two in the eighth inning and added one in the ninth to earn the 6-4 win.

Gage Ziehl had another quality start. Ziehl pitched seven innings, allowing six hits, four runs, one earned with one walk and two strikeouts. Brian Walters pitched the final two innings to earn his first save. Seven Miami players had hits on Friday. Daniel Cuvet and Lorenzo Carrier each had two RBIs.

Georgia Tech scored three runs in the first inning and expanded the lead to 9-0 after six innings. Miami scored runs in three of the final four innings to make the score more respectable. Cuvet added two more RBIs on Saturday. Rafe Schlesinger allowed eight runs in 4.1 innings in the loss.

Cam Jones pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and no walks and had four hits in the win for Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets improved to 26-16 overall and 11-10 in the ACC following the weekend series win over Miami.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Miami scored three in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the seventh for the 5-2 win. The top three hitters in the Miami order had three of the five Miami hits and four of the five RBIs. Five Miami pitchers combined for the win over FAU.

Miami does not have a midweek game. BYU will come to Coral Gables for a three-game series from Thursday through Sunday. Miami hosts Florida International next week before returning to ACC play at Virginia Tech in two weeks.
