The Miami baseball team beat Notre Dame 12-10 in 10 innings on Sunday in the final of a three-game series on Sunday in South Bend. Notre Dame won the series with a 6-2 win on Saturday after 5-2 victory on Friday. Miami improved to 13-10 overall and 5-4 in the ACC with the win on Sunday.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on Sunday, Miami allowed three in the bottom of the inning and four in the fourth to fall behind 7-1. Miami rallied with an eight run fifth to regain the lead 9-7. Villegas and Antonio Jimenez who has a .184 batting average paced the Miami offense on Sunday with two hits each.
Herick Hernandez was chased after allowing all seven runs in five innings. Miami added a run in the top of the eighth to extend the lead to 10-7. Notre Dame rallied with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game at 10 on a David Glancy two-out, two-run home run.
Daniel Cuvet had an RBI single and scored on a Jason Torres sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th as Miami went back in front 12-10 to stay and avoid the sweep by Notre Dame. Nick Robert allowed six hits and three runs over three innings, but was able to close the game out in the bottom of the 10th.
Head coach J.D. Arteaga thought Miami lacked energy in the series-opening 6-2 loss on Friday night. Miami took a 1-0 lead and was cruising as starting pitcher Gage Ziehl shut down Notre Dame allowing only one of the first 13 batters to reach base. Notre Dame took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth and would not relinquish it.
Three Notre Dame hitters finished with two hits in game one. Catcher Jack Scanlon led Miami with three hits in four at-bats. Ziehl pitched 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits, five runs, all earned with one walk and four strikeouts. Caden Spivey got the win in relief for Notre Dame. Spivey pitched three hitless innings with three strikeouts.
Saturday was more of the same as Miami left seven men on base. The top five hitters in the Miami order had eight of the Hurricanes' nine hits. Rafe Schlesinger pitched six innings, allowing eight hits, four runs, all earned with one walk and three strikeouts. Eduardo Villegas and Dorian Gonzalez had the only two Miami RBIs.
Cuvet, Gonzalez and Torres had two hits each for Miami in the loss. Seven Notre Dame batters had hits on Saturday, with three posting two each. Ricky Reeth got the win for Notre Dame in relief. Reeth held Miami to five hits and one run with no walks and two strikeouts over five innings.
Miami plays at FIU on Tuesday before hosting Clemson from Thursday through Saturday. FIU beat Miami 4-3 in Coral Gables on Tuesday. Clemson is 22-2 after sweeping Florida State. Those were the first three losses of the season for Florida State. FIU lost to Western Kentucky on Sunday to drop to 13-11.
