Miami baseball weekly update: Canes swept at Florida State, beat FAU

The Miami baseball team continued its decline with its ninth loss in their last 10 games by getting swept this weekend at Florida State.

The Miami baseball team lost for the ninth time in the last 10 games by getting swept at Florida State this weekend. The losses to Florida State was extended Miami's losing streak to eight in the ACC. A 14-6 win over Florida Atlantic on Tuesday is the only victory for Miami in over two weeks,

Underperformance by the Miami bullpen has hindered the Hurricanes in the last two weeks. Miami Head coach J.D. Arteaga called out the Miami bullpen after the loss on Friday. The Miami bullpen had a 5.77 earned run average this week. Miami is 103rd nationally with a 5.39 ERA.

Miami scored in every inning but the fifth in the win over FAU. Four Hurricanes had three hits each and Ashton Crowther earned his first win of the season against four losses in the win over the Owls. Miami earned its first win of the season versus FAU with the final game of a four-game series in Coral Gables on April 23.

Miami rallied from a 3-0 deficit at Florida State to tie the game at three. Florida State regained the lead for good with two runs in the seventh. Miami added a run in the eighth before losing 6-5. Gage Ziehl struggled allowing five earned runs in seven innings. Five different Hurricanes had one hit each.

After the game was tied entering the bottom of the third inning, Florida State regained the lead for good their half. Florida State opened the game up with six runs in the next four innings. Miami managed only a single run before scoring two in the eighth to lose 11-7.

Freshman third baseman Daniel Cuvet continued to shine with three hits, three runs scored and four runs batted in in the loss. Cuvet hit his 12th home run of the season. Rafe Schlesinger allowed seven earned runs in 3.1 innings to drop to 2-3. Three other Hurricanes had two hits. James Tibbs had four RBIs for Florida State.

After another competitive game early, Florida State scored three runs in the bottom of third to go in front 5-2 to stay. Herick Hernandez allowed five earned runs in four innings to drop to 2-4 for Miami. Dorian Gonzalez had three hits and two RBIs for Miami. Cam Smith led Florida State with three RBIs.

Miami returns home to host Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday, before a three-game series versus Louisville in Coral Gables next weekend. Miami is now 16-19 overall and 6-12 in the ACC. The Hurricanes began ACC play 4-2 with series wins over nationally ranked North Carolina and Virginia.
