Miami baseball wins opening ACC series versus Virginia

The Miami baseball team earned a big series win versus Virginia this weekend on the back of two big comebacks on Friday and Saturday.

The Miami baseball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win 6-5 on Friday, 12-3 to earn a 16-12 victory on Friday night and had two rallies from four-run deficits on Sunday before losing the series final 14-11 to Virginia this weekend. Miami improved to 8-6 by winning two out of this weekend versus Virginia.

After falling behind 4-0 on Friday, Miami scored three in the sixth inning and received a game-winning three-run home run in the seventh by star freshman third baseman Daniel Cuvet to put them in front on their way to a 6-5 win. Virginia entered the weekend ranked 13th nationally.

Miami scored six runs in the seventh inning and seven in the eighth to complete the epic comeback on Saturday night. Seven Miami players had multiple hits in the win on Saturday. Cuvet and sophomore second baseman Blake Cyr led the way for Miami. Cyr and Cuvet paced Miami with multiple runs scored, hits and RBIs on Saturday.

Miami almost pulled off the trifecta of comebacks on Sunday. The Hurricanes rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game and took an 11-10 lead in the seventh inning after trailing 10-6. Virginia scored one run in the eighth to tie the game at 11 and three runs in the ninth inning for the final margin.

Miami outscored Virginia 33-31 this weekend. The Hurricanes have been one of the best offenses nationally. Through Friday Miami was 30th nationally averaging 9.6 runs per game. Virginia was ninth nationally averaging 10.8 runs per game after Miami's win on Friday night.

Casey Saucke led Virginia to the win on Sunday with four hits in five at-bats, three runs scored and three RBIs. Saucke is one of three Virginia hitters batting over .400 this season. Cuvet and Jason Torres are hitting over .400 for Miami. Miami will play its first road game this season at Florida Atlantic on Wednesday and host North Carolina next weekend.
