Miami baseball wins series versus BYU
The Miami baseball team opened its three-game series versus Brigham Young with a 3-2 win in 12 innings on Thursday night and clinched the series with a 6-4 win on Friday before dropping the finale 8-2 on Saturday. Miami fell to 21-25 overall after losing on Saturday.
Miami led 2-0 through five innings on Saturday after fourth-inning home runs by Dorian Gonzalez and Lucas Costello. BYU scored four runs in the sixth inning, one in the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth for an 8-2 win to avoid being swept. Colin Reuter and Ryker Schow hit two-run HRs in the sixth to power BYU in front.
Kuhio Aloy added the third HR of the game for BYU in the seventh. Herick Hernandez took the loss for Miami. Hernandez pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs, striking out three and walking six. Ben Hansen pitched six innings, allowing the two runs to earn the win for BYU.
After losing two one-run leads, Miami walked off BYU in the 12th on Thursday night. Brian Walters allowed a leadoff HR to Aloy in the ninth inning on Friday night that tied the game at two. Daniel Cuvet who had four of Miami's eight hits on Friday singled in Jacolby Long in the 12th to give Miami the 3-2 win.
Miami took a 6-1 lead after five innings on Friday night and held on for a 6-4 win. Cuvet had three hits in five at-bats with two runs scored and five RBIs, including a grand slam. Rafe Schlesinger pitched 6.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs, one earned with two walks and nine strikeouts to improve to 3-4.
After not playing a midweek game last week, Miami will host FIU on Wednesday. Miami plays a three-game series from Friday through Sunday. Virginia Tech is 30-14 overall and 13-11 in fourth place in the ACC Coastal Division. This is the penultimate week of the baseball season before the ACC Tournament May 21-26 in Charlotte.
