Miami basketball has accumulated depth to absorb Norchad Omier entering draft
The Miami basketball team has added enough depth to absorb the entry of forward Norchad Omier into the 2024 NBA Draft, reported by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports on Friday. Miami added Virginia Tech center Lynn Kidd and East Carolina forward Brandon Johnson as transfers since the end of the 2023-24 season.
Omier was seventh in the ACC averaging 17.03 points per game and second averaging 9.97 rebounds in 2023-24. Omier led Miami in scoring and rebounding in 2023-24. Miami added Johnson and Kidd for the 2024-25 season after Omier was the only consistently productive post player they had in 2023-24.
Omier played two seasons with Miami after spending the previous two years at Arkansas State. The addition of Omier during the 2022 offseason helped solidify the post for Miami. With Omier dominating the boards, Miami advanced to the 2023 NCAA Tournament Final Four.
Early entrants have until April 27 to submit their names to the 2024 NBA Draft. The NBA Draft Early Entry Entrant Withdrawal Deadline is June 16 at 5 p.m. ET. Omier significantly improved his overall game this season making 35.3 of his three-point attempts. At 6'5.5, Omier will likely project as a hybrid forward as a professional.
Kidd averaged 13.2 points per game, led Virginia Tech with 6.5 rebounds and 66.8 percent from the floor, plus shot 84.2 percent from the free-throw line during the 2023-24 season. Johnson averaged 14.0 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game in 2023-24 at East Carolina.
With Kidd at 6'10 and Johnson 6'8, Miami will have a significantly bigger rotation next season. Omier has the option of returning next season. Most NBA Draft big boards do not project Omier to be selected in the 2024 NBA Draft. Another year of college could help Omier continue to expand his game.
At 6'5.5, Omier faces the likelihood of being undrafted, whether he remains in the 2024 NBA Draft or decides to return to college next year and utilize his full college eligibility. As Jim Larranaga and his staff continue to assemble the roster for next season, they are awaiting decisions from forward Matthew Cleveland guard Wooga Poplar.
Miami previously lost guard Kyshawn George to the 2024 NBA Draft earlier this week (not official) and guard Bensley Joseph and four other players to the transfer portal last month. It was reported on Friday that Joseph is transferring to Providence. Miami signed the 12th best 2024 class, led by five-star guard Jalil Bethea.
