Miami basketball worst 2023-24 offensive output in ACC Tourney loss to VT

The Miami basketball team had its lowest offensive output of the 2023-24 season in a 55-47 loss to Virginia Tech in the Women's ACC Tournament on Friday.

The Miami basketball team was in the game until a late Virginia Tech run put the Hurricanes away 55-47in the ACC Women's Tournament quarterfinals on Friday. Virginia Tech went on a 10-3 run to extend a 39-37 lead to 49-40 and essentially put the game away. The Hokies played without star center Elizabeth Kitley.

Miami stayed in the game because of its defense and the ability to limit Virginia Tech point guard Georgia Amoore. Amoore was limited to four points on 1-5 from the floor, 0-3 three-point attempts and played only 13 minutes due to two first-half fouls. Amoore carried Virginia Tech in the second half.

In the second half Amoore scored 23 points on 7-14 from the floor, 1-4 threes and 8-10 from the free throw line. Virginia Tech had 30 points in the second half. Miami was led by Jasmyn Roberts with 12 and Shayeann Day-Wilson had 11. Miami and Virginia Tech were within one possession throughout the first quarter.

Virginia Tech separated themselves by taking a 25-20 lead at halftime. Freshman center Clara Strack made up for the absence of Kitley with eight points and three rebounds in the first half. Roberts led Miami with eight points in the first half. No other Hurricanes had more than four in the opening two quarters.

Miami fell behind by seven in the third quarter. The Hurricanes rallied to cut the deficit to one before Amoore made a layup at the third-quarter buzzer to extend the lead to 36-33 after three. Virginia Tech went on a 6-0 run (as part of their 12-3 run) during a 5:01 drought for Miami that put the game away.

Miami finishes the regular season 19-12. The Hurricanes will find out their NCAA Tournament destiny on March 17. Miami was 50th in the NCAA NetRatings entering today. Charlie Creme of ESPN has Miami as the 10th seed in the USC Subregional versus Mississippi as part of the Albany 1 subregional.
