Miami firmly in command in post week 6 State of Florida Power Rankings
Now two games clear of anyone else in the loss column, Miami has a stranglehold on the top spot in the State of Florida post-week six power rankings. Florida and Central Florida exchanged the second and third spots after the Gators beat the Knights on Saturday. Florida Atlantic, Florida International and South Florida had bye weeks.
Florida State continued its downward spiral with a 29-13 home loss to Clemson. Miami is clearly the best team in Florida. It is a significant dropoff to Florida and Central Florida. FAU, FIU and South Florida could potentially emerge ahead of Central Florida and Florida depending on how the remainder of the season plays out.
Florida State is clearly and obviously the worst team in Florida in 2024. The only games Florida State is favored in the remainder of the 2024 season are versus North Carolina and Charleston Southern per the ESPN Football Power Index. If the projections hold, Florida State would finish 3-9 a year after going 13-0.
Miami has a bye week, then is at Louisville on October 19. The game at Louisville is projected as the hardest one for Miami. The FPI projects Miami with a 56.9 percent chance to beat Louisville. Louisville lost its second consecutive game, 34-27 to SMU on Saturday to fall to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC.
Rank | Team | Record |
---|---|---|
1 | Miami | 6-0 |
2 | Florida | 3-2 |
3 | Central Florida | 3-2 |
4 | Florida Atlantic | 2-3 |
5 | Florida International | 2-3 |
6 | South Florida | 2-3 |
7 | Florida State | 1-5 |
Miami remains 10th nationally in the FPI after their epic 39-38 comeback win over California. The Hurricanes trailed 35-10 in the third quarter. Florida moved up 10 spots after its 24-13 win over Central Florida on Saturday. Central Florida dropped eight spots in the post week six FPI.
Florida State dropped four spots to 67th in the FPI, South Florida is 92nd, FAU moved up five spots to 99th and FIU one to 111th. The FPI is not perfect, but it gives a good indication of where teams are. FSU is simply playing far worse than the team they have. Other than Miami, the State of Florida football is a mess.
Florida seems to be improving. After a bye, the second half of their schedule is brutal. Florida finishes the season beginning on October 12 at Tennessee, versus Kentucky and Georgia (in Jacksonville) at Texas, versus LSU and Mississippi and at Florida State. It is going to be difficult to see Florida winning three more games to become bowl-eligible.
It is conceivable that Miami will earn a College Football Playoff berth as the only team from Florida to play in the 2024 postseason. Central Florida, FAU, FIU and South Florida are the programs to watch with the best potential to earn bowl berths among the other teams in Florida. Florida and Florida State project to be out of the postseason.
