After the 2022 season, Miami defensive coordinator Kevin Steele left for Alabama. The departure of Steele benefitted the Miami football program. Mario Cristobal hired Guidry from Tulane to replace Steele. Guidry was at Tulane for a few weeks after leading an elite Marshall defense during the 2022 season.

Miami is the first Power Five job at all for Guidry. He has been an FCS head coach and Group of Five defensive coordinator before being hired by Cristobal. Guidry utilized the talent on the roster in 2023 and showed the ability to adapt to the personnel. Miami lost starting defensive linemen Nyjalik Kelly and Akheem Mesidor for the season.

Miami switched from a 4-2-5 defensive alignment to a 3-3-5 after losing Kelly and Mesidor for the season. Defensive lineman Rueben Bain earned ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year and Francisco Mauigoa emerged as an All-ACC player at middle linebacker.
