The Miami football program added its fourth transfer addition in less than 24 hours with Houston wide receiver Sam Brown committing on Sunday night. Brwon was preeceeded by Oregon State running back Damien Martinez, Louisville linebacker Jaylin Alderman and Marshall cornerback Dyani Hill.
Alderman, Brown and Martinez are projected starters. The additions of Brown and Martinez are huge boosts to the Miami offense. Brown was eighth in the Big XII in 2023 averaging 67.9 receiving yards per game on 62 receptions for 815 yards with three touchdowns.
Brown finished in the top 10 in most measures in explosive receptions with 33 catches of 10 or more yards and 12 of 20 or more. Miami will have an elite receiving corps with Brown, Xavier Restrepo and Jacolby George. Isaiah Horton and JoJo Trader will be key parts of the rotation as the fourth and fifth receivers.
Brown developed under current Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson in 2022 after transferring from West Virginia. In his only season under Dawson at Houston, Brown had 41 receptions for 471 yards and four touchdowns. Brown improved to 62 receptions for 815 yards and three TDs in 2023.
At 6'2 and 195 pounds, Brown becomes the second tallest WR on the Miami roster. Horton is 6'4. With Brown and Horton on the roster, Miami should improve in the red zone in 2024. Miami was 90th in 2023 converting 57.69 percent of its red zone attempts into touchdowns.
The additions of Brown, Martinez and Cam Ward to go with George and Restrepo gives Miami one of the most accomplished and experienced offenses in the country. Brown began building chemistry with Ward when they worked out together in Houston earlier this month. Miami should be vastly improved offensive in 2024.
Brown is the 12th transfer overall and fifth on offense for Miami in 2024. In addition to Brown, Martinez and Ward, Miami added backup QB Reese Poffenbarger and center Zach Carpenter. The Miami transfer class moved up nearly 20 spots in 24 hours to 16th nationally.
