Miami football: After falling out of rotation Davonte Brown transferring
After being touted as a potential starter after transferring from Central Florida during the 2023 offseason, Davonte Brown has entered the portal for a second straight offseason. Brown did play a snap in the Pinstripe Bowl versus Rutgers. Brown received limited snaps as the 2023 Miami football season progressed.
After receiving 45 snaps in a 20-6 loss to North Carolina State to begin November, Brown received 15 snaps over the final four games of the 2023 season. In addition to not playing versus Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl, Brown also did not receive any snaps against Louisville.
Brown only received three snaps in the final regular season game at Boston College. Jaden Davis, Te'Cory Couch and Darryl Porter Jr. were all in the final top 10 on Miami in Pro Football Focus grades at the end of the season among the Miami CBs.
Brown's younger brother Damari passed Brown on the depth chart as a true freshman. There is no indication that Damari Brown will follow Davonte into the transfer portal. Couch and Davis are out of eligibility. Porter has the option to return as a fifth-year senior in 2024. Damari Brown projects as a starter for Miami in 2024.
Brown played in 10 games this season recording 10 tackles and one pass breakup. Before playing for Miami, Brown had 86 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, three interceptions, 17 pass breakups and one forced fumble in three seasons at UCF. Miami could add CBs through the transfer portal.
In addition to Damari Brown and potentially Porter Jr., Miami also is projected to return Demetrius Freeney, Jaden Harris, Jaidus Richard and 2023 freshman Robert Stafford at CB in 2024. Three-star signee Romanas Frederique Jr. is the only CB in the 2024 Miami class. Harris, Richard and Stafford will compete for playing time in 2024.
