Miami football all-time record versus Cal, SMU and Stanford
The Miami football program has only played five combined games versus new ACC rivals California, SMU and Stanford. Miami has not played any of the three since a 24-17 loss to Cal in the now-defunct Emerald Bowl in 2008. Miami will play at California on October 5 this season.
Miami will play at SMU in the first game between the Hurricanes and Mustangs as ACC opponents in 2025. Stanford will play at Miami in 2026 in the first game between the Cardinal and Hurricanes ever. Miami will host Cal in 2026, SMU in 2029 and travel to Stanford in 2026.
California beat Miami 9-7 in 1964 in the first meeting between the programs. Miami beat Cal 31-3 at home in 1989 and 52-24 at Berkeley in 1990 before the Bears' win in the 2008 Emerald Bowl. Miami has frequently had key players in their program from California. That includes quarterbacks Ken Dorsey and Gino Torretta.
SMU beat Miami 7-3 in Dallas in 1964 in the only meeting between the Mustangs and Hurricanes. SMU was on a trajectory to be a team of the 1980s before receiving the death penalty in 1987. SMU had consecutive 10-win seasons from 1981β84 before falling to six-win seasons before the NCAA eliminated their program.
Miami has also had key players from the Dallas Metroplex. Wide receiver Kevin Williams became an All-American with Miami from Dallas. Current Miami tight end Elijah Arroyo is from Dallas. Miami also had an infamous 46-3 win over Texas in the 1991 Cotton Bowl.
The Miami football program has frequently lost old rivalries and cultivated new ones throughout its history. Miami lost Florida in 1987 and Notre Dame in 1990 as annual games off their schedule. Miami will play Cal, SMU and Stanford only every few years unless they have an unlikely meeting in the ACC Championship Game.
