Miami Football CB Darryl Porter Jr. primed for big 2024 season
Cornerback Darryl Porter Jr. was one of the most underrecognized players on the Miami football team in 2023. Porter Jr. played in nine games, with one start in 2022 after transferring from West Virginia. After Miami lost D.J. Ivey and Tyrique Stevenson to the NFL, Porter Jr. started all 10 games he played in 2023.
Porter was quietly the fourth highest-rated player for Miami in 2024, with an 80.3 grade from Pro Football Focus. Porter missed only one tackle in 2023, allowing 11 receptions for 108 yards on 22 targets per PFF via David Lake of Inside the U. Porter had 22 tackles and four passed defended in 2023.
After missing the final three games with an injury, Porter Jr. returned for the Pinstripe Bowl versus Rugters, recording two tackles and a pass breakup. Porter Kr. had the highest defensive grade on the Miami football team in 2023. Sophomore Damari Brown and junior Jadais Richard give Miami a solid corps at CB in 2024.
Brown, Porter Jr. and Richard will be critical for Miami with the Hurricanes starting new safeties in 2024. Savion Riley from Vanderbilt and Mishael Powell from National Runner-Up Washington are the projected starting new safeties for Miami in 2024. Porter Jr. is the most experienced defensive back Miami will have in 2024.
Porter Jr. more than doubled most of his production from 2022 to 2023. Expect another increase in production from Porter in 2024. Porter Jr. had his best season in 2022 with West Virginia when he had 464 tackles, one TFL, seven passes defended and his lone college interception.
Miami will have a mostly experienced defense in 2024. Porter Jr. will be one of several senior starters for Miami this fall. With Brown and Richard entering the second seasons with Miami, Porter Jr. should be the leader of the 2024 Miami secondary. Expect Porter Jr. to challenge to earn All-ACC.
