Miami football enters 2024 season among elite with over 50 percent blue-chip ratio
The Miami football team is 12th in the 247Sports Blue Chip Ratio ratings. Developed by Bud Elliott, the blue chip ratio is the percentage of players on a college football roster who were four or five-star high school signees. Having a roster of over 50 percent has usually been predictive of the national champion.
Under Mario Cristobal Miami has upgraded their recruiting. Miami finished with the 16th ranked class in an extremely short cycle in the inaugural Miami class under Cristobal in 2022. In the first full cycle under Cristobal in 2023 Miami signed the seventh-ranked class. The 2024 class was fourth nationally.
The strong classes have led to Miami having a 61 percent blue chip ratio. Elliott does not include transfers in his rankings. Miami has five five-star players on its roster and 32 four-star players on its roster per 247Sports not including 2024 incoming transfers, Tyler Baron and C.J. Clark.
Only three National Champions since 2013 have had a Blue Chip Ratio below 64 percent. Clemson had the lowest Blue Chip Ratio among National Champions at 53 percent in 2016. Florida State had the second lowest at 53 percent in 2013 and Michigan was at 54 percent in 2023.
Two years after winning the National Championship in 2016, Clemson won the title again with a 68 percent Blue Chip Ratio. Clemson is 10th in 2024 with a Blue Chip Ratio of 64 percent. Dabo Swinney has practically refused to embrace transfers. Clemson did not sign any transfers for 2024.
Florida State amazingly missed the list with 49 percent of its roster four or five star high school signees. Elliott expects Florida State to re-join the programs with a 50 percent blue chip ratio next season. Florida State head coach Mike Norvell has embraced the transfer portal. The Seminoles have thrived in developing transfers.
The top eight teams in the Blue Chip Ratio are in the Big 10 or SEC. Notre Dame is ninth with a Blue Chip Ratio of 67 percent. Clemson and Miami are the only teams outside of the Big 10 or SEC on the list. No teams from the Big XII have a Blue Chip Ratio of at least 50 percent entering the 2024 season.
Florida is the only team on the 2024 Miami schedule with a Blue Chip Ratio of at least 50 percent. Florida is one spot ahead of Miami in 11th with a Blue Chip Ratio of 63 percent. Miami has frequently appeared on the Blue Chip Ratio list. Cristobal has upgraded the talent for Miami entering his third season.
The 2025 Miami class is trending towards the top 10 for the third consecutive year. Miami currently had the 10th-best 2025 class per the 247Sports composite rankings. Ten of the 2025 Miami commits are four stars. Miami has yet to receive a commitment from a five-star prospect in the 2025 class.
