Georgia Tech and Florida State are the only 2024 opponents the Miami football team will have a chance to avenge 2023 losses against. The Yellow Jackets and Seminoles are the only teams Miami played in 2023 who are on their 2024 schedule. With 17 teams in the ACC for football Miami will only play two teams annually beginning in 2024.
Florida State and Virginia Tech have been designated Miami's permanent rivals. Georgia Tech and Louisville will not play an annual conference rival as assigned by the ACC. Miami suffered two of its most painful losses in 2024 to Georgia Tech and Florida State. The loss to Georgia Tech is one of the most infamous in college football history.
Enough has been said about Miami's 2023 loss to Georgia Tech. With third and 10 at the Georgia Tech 30-yard line and 33 seconds left, all Miami had to do was take a knee to run the clock out. Mario Cristobal elected to run Don Chaney Jr., who fumbled to give the ball back to Georgia Tech and the Yellow Jackets eventually won 23-20.
Miami will have a chance to avenge its 2023 loss to Georgia Tech in Atlanta on November 9. Georgia Tech is 54th in the ESPN Football Power Index and is projected to finish with a record of 4.9-7.2. Miami is 23rd in the FPI and is projected to finish 8.2-4.0.
Miami lost 27-20 at Florida State in 2023. Emory Williams started his second game as a true freshman versus Florida State. Miami outgained Florida State 335 to 322. Williams finished 8-23 for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Jacolby George had five receptions for 153 yards and caught both TD passes from Williams.
Miami will host Florida State on October 26. Florida State at Miami is expected to be a pivotal game determining who plays in the ACC Championship Game on December 7 in Charlotte. If Miami can defeat Florida State, they could be in the driver's seat to earn a berth in Charlotte.
Miami will look very different in 2024 than many of their principal players in the losses to Georgia Tech and Florida State. Chaney transferred to Louisville. Williams will compete with Albany transfer Reese Poffenbarger to backup Washington State transfer Cam Ward. George should be one of Ward's primary receivers in 2024.
When the ACC holds the annual kickoff meeting in Charlotte next month, Miami will be among the favorites to win the ACC with Clemson and Florida State. Ward has an excellent chance of being chosen preseason ACC Player of the Year. The expectations are high for Miami entering the 2024 season.
