At 6'7 and 270 pounds Collins Acheampong was an intriguing prospect for the Miami football program when he signed in the 2023 class. Acheampong entered the transfer portal late on Sunday. Miami returns a lot of talent on the DL and added the best group at the position in the 2024 class.
The Miami football program flipped Acheampong from Michigan late in the 2023 recruiting cycle. Acheampong did not record any stats in 2023. Acheampong was regarded as a versatile DL with the potential to play inside or outside. Late to playing football, Acheampong seemed more destined to be a defensive tackle for Miami.
The entry in the transfer portal by Acheampong costs Miami a developmental DL with a high upside. Miami has a lot of elite DL returning in 2024 and signed the best class at the position in 2024. Rueben Bain was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year in the ACC playing primarily edge rusher for Miami in 2023.
Edge rushers Akheem Mesidor and Nyjalik Kelly will be back after missing of most of the 2023 season with injuries. Freshmen Jayden Wayne who had three tackles versus Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl will be a part of the 2024 Miami DL rotation. Several of the 2024 Miami DL signees should compete to be in the 2024 Miami rotation.
Miami signed five-star defensive tackles Armondo Bryant and Justin Scott and four-star edge rushers Marquise Lightfoot, Booker Pickett Jr. and Elias Rudolph in the 2024 class. Bryant, Lightfoot and Rudolph are all players who can potentially make impacts as freshmen.
Miami has also added transfer DL C.J. Clark from North Carolina State and Marley Cook from Middle Tennessee State to its 2024 roster. Acheampong had a difficult path to playing time in 2024. After redshirting for Miami in 2024, Acheampong will have four years of eligiblity remaining with his next program.
