The Miami football team has had a played selected in 50 consecutive NFL Drafts after safety Kamren Kinchens was the 99th player selected overall by the Los Angeles Rams in the third round. Miami has had only one player drafted only twice during their 50-year streak of having a player selected in the NFL Draft.

Linebacker Spencer Atkins was the only Miami player drafted in 2009. Atkins went 176th overall to the Atlanta Falcons. Miami cut it close in 2022. Defensive tackle Jonathon Ford was selected 234th overall by the Green Bay Packers in 2022. The streak began in 1975 when guard Dennis Harrah was selected 11th overall by the Los Angeles Rams.

Harrah had a great 13-year NFL career. Harrah was named an All-Pro six times and was named first-team All-Pro in 1986. There have been 63 first-round picks from Miami since 1975, including Harrah. Edge rushers Jaelan Phillips and Gregory Rousseau were the last first-round picks from Miami in 2021.

Phillips was selected 18th overall by the Dolphins. The Buffalo Bills chose Rousseau 30th overall in 2021. From Harrah to Kinchens Miami has had 276 players selected in the NFL Draft since 1975. Miami has produced only six first-round picks since 2008. Miami should have another first-round pick in at least 2026.

Kinchens is the first Miami draftee by the Rams since center Kelvin Harris was taken in the 12th round, 312th overall in 1992. Kinchens is the 11th Miami player selected by the Rams all-time. Offensive tackle Roland Benson was the first Miami player selected by the Rams, 60th overall in the fifth round in 1963.

Kinchens being drafted by the Rams on Friday night brings the Miami 50-year streak full circle that began with Harrah in 1975. Harrah had one of the best NFL careers by a Miami offensive lineman. Kinchens hopes to become the next great NFL safety from Miami.
