Miami football post-spring two-deep CB depth chart appears set
The two-deep cornerback depth chart for the Miami football program appears set after the Hurricanes concluded spring practice last month and added depth in the transfer portal. Miami returns starting CBs Damari Brown and Daryl Porter Jr. reserve Jadais Richard and added Marshall transfer Dyoni Hill.
Brown, Porter, Hill and Richard are projected as the top CBs for Miami in 2024. Brown played 10 games as a true freshman in 2023, starting the final four and finishing with 14 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Porter became a starter in his second season with Miami in 2023, finishing with 16 tackles and four pass breakups.
Porter started all 10 games he played for Miami in 2023. After transferring from West Virginia in 2022, Porter played nine games with one start. Porter had 10 tackles and one PBU in 2022. Brown provides Miami with excellent length outside at 6'2 and Porter is the most experienced Miami defensive back entering his fifth season.
Richard played in 11 games with one start while recording 14 tackles in his first season with Miami after transferring from Vanderbilt. At 6'1, Richard provides Miami with another CB with length. Washington transfer Mishael Powell primarily played the slot this spring but is expected to return to safety.
Hill had a breakout season in 2023 as a sophomore with 55 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, 10 pass breakups and a forced fumble. Miami needs improvement from Hill in pass coverage. As a freshman in 2022, Hill had one tackle primarily playing on special teams.
Per Pro Football Focus via Barry Jackson of the Miami HeraldΒ "Hill allowed a 93 passer rating in his coverage area last season β 32 completions in 57 attempts for 464 yards (14.5 average), three touchdowns and an interception."
Sophomore Robert Stafford could challenge Hill and Richard for snaps. True freshmen Dylan Day and Romanus Fredrique Jr. are developmental players who will add depth in 2024. The secondary is the biggest question mark for Miami entering 2024. Miami needs the top four CBs to stay consistent and be healthy in 2024.
