The Miami football program is tied with nine other teams for 27th in "College football transfer portal: Every departing starter from power conference teams during the 2023-24 cycle." The 2023 Miami starters lost to the transfer portal were quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, defensive tackle Jared Harrison-Hunte and wide receiver Colbie Young.

Miami is tied for seventh in the ACC with California and Louisville with three starters lost to the transfer portal. Duke and Wake Forest lost five starters to the transfer portal which was the most in the ACC. Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Stanford and Syracuse each lost four starters to the portal.

Miami upgraded at QB with the addition of Cam Ward to replace Van Dyke. The additions of Simeon Barrow, C.J. Clark and Marley Cook at DT should make up for the loss of Harrison-Hunte. At the worst, adding Sam Brown at WR should be an even trade for Miami. Brown and Young have different skill sets.

Brown provides Miami with good height at 6'2. Although not as tall as the 6'5 Young, Brown is faster and has more elusiveness than Young. Brown is a good match with returning leading receivers Xavier Restrepo and Jacolby George. Miami has 14 new transfers total on the 2024 roster.

North Carolina State finished seventh and Syracuse is ninth nationally in the net transfer rankings. Regarding talent brought in, Florida State is seventh nationally in the 247Sports team transfer portal rankings and Miami is 10th. Miami is one of five teams that signed a top-10 recruiting and transfer class.

Barrow, Brown and Ward should have a bigger impact than the losses of Harrison-Hunte, Van Dyke and Ward. Mario Cristobal his staff did an excellent job identifying who they wanted in the spring transfer portal and brought in six key players. Running back Damien Martinez will replace Henry Parrish who started six games for Miami in 2023.

Barrow, Brown, linebacker Jaylin Alderman, cornerback Dyoni Hill and edge rusher Tyler Baron are all spring transfer additions expected to play key roles for Miami in 2024. Miami would be ranked near the top nationally among the spring transfer portal additions.
