Miami nearly rallied from a 12-0 deficit in the fourth quarter with only a fumble at the Florida seven-yard yardline with two minutes left holding off a Hurricanes upset bid at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville. The Florida win earned them a Gator Bowl berth.

Number 10 and defending national champions Miami defeated top-ranked Auburn 20-18 at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Miami held off an Auburn rally in the fourth quarter. Miami rose to number one with the win and Auburn fell to eighth in the week two poll.

Five days after beating Auburn, Miami played a second consecutive regular season neutral site game for the only time in program history. Miami earned a 32-20 win over Florida in Tampa. A Bernie Kosar to Eddie Brown touchdown pass with seven seconds left gave Miami the lead before a Tolbert Bain pick-six iced the win.

Miami earned a decisive win over Boston College at what was technically a neutral site game at Foxboro Stadium, the home of the New England Patriots. Miami's win was powered by an 82-yard TD pass from Vinny Testaverde and a 100-yard Selwyn Brown interception return for a TD.
