Edge rusher Rueben Bain and linebackers Jaylin Alderman and Francisco Mauigoa represent an ACC high three players returning for the Miami football team who rank in the top 20 in the conference in returning players producing tackles for loss or stops for no gain entering the 2024 season.

Virginia Tech and Wake Forest also have three returning players in the top 20 who produced the most tackles for loss or stops for no gain in 2023. Mauigoa is tied with Ashton Gillotte of Louisville for the most tackles for loss or stops for no gain in 2023 among returning ACC players with 26.

Bain is 10th with 19 TFLs/stops for no gain among returning players and Alderman is 14th with 17. Miami was fourth in the ACC in 2023 with 88 tackles for loss and third with 35 sacks. Mauigoa led the ACC with 18 tackles for loss in 2023 and tied for fifth with Bain and Jasheen Davis of Wake Forest with 7.5 TFLs.

Bain tied for ninth in the ACC with five other players, producing 12.5 TFLs in 2023. Alderman was 37th in the ACC with 7.0 TFLs and had 1.5 sacks in a breakout season including 62 tackles. Mauigoa was 16th in the ACC with 82 tackles and Alderman was 39th.

Miami should continue to thrive producing negative plays defensively. Alderman and Mauigoa will team with Wesley Bissianthe to provide Miami with one of the most experienced and productive LB corps in the ACC. Alderman provides Miami with another disruptive player on defense after transferring from Louisville.

Bain will work next to defensive tackles Simeon Barrow, C.J. Clark and Marley Cook and across from edge rushers Elijah Alston and Akheem Mesidor to provide Miami with a front four who can creative plays for negative yardage. Alston was 17th in the Sun Belt in 2023 with 11.5 TFLs.

The front seven should be the strength of the Miami defense in 2024. Alderman, Alston, Bain and Mauigoa project to be the disruptors for Miami defensively. Miami is expected to return to its base 4-2-5 defense in 2024 after coordinator Lance Guidry played a 3-3-5 for most of the 2023 season due to injuries on the defensive line.
