Miami football transfer WR outgoing versus incoming production
The addition of Houston transfer Sam Brown provides the Miami football program with an explosive wide receiver at 6'2. Brown is the second tallest WR on the Miami roster to Isaiah Horton and will replace Colbie Young as the starter. Young transferred to Georgia following the 2023 season.
Miami also lost Frank Ladson to UMass and Breshard Smith to SMU in the 2024 transfer portal. Brown had nearly as much production in 2023 as Ladson, Smith and Young combined. Brown can provide Miami with skills that Smith and Young brought to the Hurricanes combined in previous seasons.
At 6'5 Young was a huge target for the Miami quarterbacks. Smith provided explosiveness as a kick returner and WR. Young was third on Miami in 2023 with 47 receptions for 563 yards and five TDs. Smith was fourth on Miami with 22 receptions for 263 yards and two TDs. Smith's numbers were down significantly from 2022.
Ladson transferred to Miami from Clemson in 2022. A South Dade alum, there was a lot of hope that Ladson could flourish at home after dealing with injuries at Clemson. After being Miami's fourth leading receving in 2022, Ladson fell out of the rotation and did not have a reception in 2023.
Wide Receiver | Years | Miami Production |
---|---|---|
Frank Ladson | 2022-2023 | 27 receptions, 298 yards, one TD |
Breshard Smith | 2021-2023 | 69 receptions, 770 yards, four TDs. 39 kickoff returns, 975 yards 1 TD, four punt returns 24 yards |
Colbie Young | 2022-2023 | 79 receptions, 930 yards, 10 TDs |
Brown led Houston with 62 receptions for 815 yards and finished third with three TDs. Brown was the 61st-ranked transfer and 10th WR in the 2024 portal. Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson coached Brown with Houston in 2022. Brown has 113 career receptions for 1,394 yards and seven TDs.
Most of Brown's production was with Houston in 2022 and 2023. Brown had 10 receptions for 10 yards and no TD at West Virginia in 2020 and 2021. In two seasons with Houston, Brown had 103 receptions for 1,286 yards and seven TDs. Brown had 41 receptions for 471 yards and four TDs under Dawson in 2022.
Similar to running back with the addition of Damien Martinez and the loss of three outgoing transfers at the position, Miami appears to have improved at wide receiver with the addition of Brown. Adding Brown should outweigh Miami losing Ladson, Smith and Young to the transfer portal.
