The Miami Hurricanes baseball team lost on Sunday as Florida won two out of three games in Coral Gables this weekend. The Miami women's basketball team concluded their regular season with a 71-66 overtime loss to Georgia Tech Sunday. Miami will begin Spring football practice on Monday.
The Miami baseball team has lost four of its last six games after dropping the series finale to Florida on Sunday. Miami lost the penultimate game versus Long Island last weekend, lost to 12-10 to Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday and two of three to Florida this weekend. Miami drops to 6-5 with the loss on Sunday.
The middle of the Miami batting order had eight of their 12 hits in the loss to Florida Gulf Coast. Seven of the 12 Florida Gulf Coast runs came in the eighth and 12th innings combined. Third baseman Daniel Cuvet and first baseman Jason Torres each had three hits for the Hurricanes versus the Eagles.
Florida got off to a slow start on Friday night before scoring two runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth, two in the seventh and one in the ninth in a 7-3 win. Miami led 3-1 after four innings before the Gators began to seize control of the game. Miami leadoff hitter Edgardo Villegas had three of the Hurricanes' seven hits and scored two runs.
Miami evened the series on Saturday by taking a 5-0 lead after two innings. After Florida scored three in the fifth inning, Miami pushed the lead back out with four in the seventh. Florida scored three in the top of the eighth. Miami closed out the scoring in a 10-6 win with a single run in the eighth.
Miami hit three HRs to one for Florida on Saturday night. Cuvet and Flores each had two hits. Rafe Schlesinger pitched 6.1 innings allowing three runs with nine strikeouts to improve to 2-0 this season on Saturday night. Torres, Villegas and Cuvet all homered in the win on Saturday night.
Florida slugged their way to an 8-4 win on Sunday with five HRs. Dorian Gonzalez hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to get Miami within 6-4. Colby Shelton hit a two-run HR in the top of the ninth to close the scoring. Miami hosts Stonehill on Wednesday before starting ACC play on Friday versus Virginia.
The loss by the Miami Women's basketball team drops them to 18-11 overall and 8-10 in the ACC. Miami was locked into the ninth seed in the ACC Tournament that begins Wednesday. Miami missed all four of its overtime free throws. Georgia Tech was 6-6 from the line in overtime. That was the difference in the game.
Shayeann Day-Wilson scored 21 of her career her 27 points in the first half. Lazaria Spearman was the only other Hurricane in double figures with 12 points and added 12 rebounds. Kay Blackshear led Georgia Tech with 18 points and Tonie Morgan finished with 16.
The Miami football team will begin a new era, with the start of spring practice on Monday. The attention will be on new quarterback Cameron Ward. Ward has been one of the most discussed QBs and transfers during the 2024 offseason. Safety will be another position to watch this spring.
